It is been found that 79% of all the soil in your carpet is dry, particulate soil. Basically what this means is that this soil is made up of things such as dust, pet dander, hair, etc. All these soils can be easily removed by thorough vacuuming which you can do yourself. A thorough, weekly vacuuming goes further than anything you can do to enhance the beauty of your carpet and increase the lifetime of your carpet.

Another area of maintenance is proper spot cleaning. There are several products available and some quite good. The problem is that these products do no go far enough in their directions. Properly used, the spot cleaner should be used to remove the spot and then a damp, white towel should be used to remove the excess spot cleaner. If not rinsed, the spot cleaner leaves a detergent residue. This residue becomes sticky and actually attracts soil as people and pets walk over it. The end result is that you created a worse spot. The correct term for this is rapid re-soiling.

Many people do not have their carpet cleaned on a regular basis because they believe or have been told that carpet gets dirtier more quickly after it has been cleaned. Some cleaners leave too much residue in the carpet which could cause re-soiling.

The amount of residue left behind is most often attributed to the method of cleaning. The HOT WATER 'STEAM' EXTRACTION method does the best job of removing excess residue. This is the method Total Carpet Solutions uses.

Another problem which is quite prevalent is known as "WICKING". Many people will clean an area; however, in a few days or weeks the same spot re-appears. This can happen even when your carpet was cleaned by a professional cleaner. The reason for this is that the spot or stain goes deep into the carpet, usually past the backing. When you cleaned, you only clean the surface of the carpet fibers (or to the backing in the case of steam extractions). The stain or spot was really still there and eventually it will work it's way back or "WICK UP" to the top of the fibers. Again, the best method for permanent removal of these stains or spots is through the HOT WATER "STEAM" EXTRACTION method, currently used at Total Carpet Solutions
